The European Commission has developed a plan for a complete abandonment of Russian energy resources: details and timelines.

The European Commission plans to gradually abandon Russian gas
The European Commission has presented a plan that provides for the cessation of imports of Russian gas by the end of 2027 and a reduction in dependence on Russian oil and nuclear materials. This document was published in Strasbourg on May 6, 2025.
According to this plan, the EU intends to implement nine measures that will effectively reduce the presence of Russian energy in European markets while ensuring security of supply and minimizing impact on prices.
'Dependence on Russian energy imports poses serious risks to the security and economy of the Union and its member states, as Russia has continuously used energy supplies as a weapon to threaten the stability and prosperity of the Union,' the document states.
EU plans regarding the import of Russian gas and oil
Despite attempts at diversification, in 2024 the EU imported 52 billion cubic meters of Russian gas, accounting for 19% of total imports. Additionally, EU countries also purchased crude oil and uranium from Russia.
The plan includes a ban on new gas contracts by the end of 2025 and a complete ban on imports of Russian gas, including existing contracts, by the end of 2027. Regarding the nuclear sector, the plan provides for restrictions on the import of enriched uranium and other materials from Russia.
For the oil sector, the plan includes national strategies to phase out Russian oil and strengthen sanctions. The Commission intends to present legislative proposals in the near future and urges member states to develop their plans by the end of 2025.
The implementation of this roadmap will require the efforts of all member states and EU institutions to ensure energy supply security and prevent political influence on energy resource prices.
