How to Spend Summer Vacation Safely - A Guide from a Pediatrician.

Summer is freedom, water, adventures. But along with the sun and warmth, the number of risks increases. During wartime, the usual dangers are compounded by the threat of mines, heat without air conditioning, and complicated logistics for medical assistance. As a pediatrician, I have gathered a guide for parents: how to spend the summer safely while preserving health and peace of mind.
Mine Safety: How to Teach Your Child
Children are curious. But curiosity can be dangerous. That is why UNICEF, the Ministry of Education, and the State Emergency Service created the site 'Superteam Against Mines'. There, in cartoons and comics, they explain what explosive items are and why they are not toys. What is important to remember? If a child sees a suspicious object (toy, bottle, phone) — do not touch it, step back, call adults. It is not advisable to walk new routes in parks, fields, or forests without confirmation from sapper professionals. Fragments, shells, casings — are not 'souvenirs' and should not be in a child's hands. It is also forbidden to light a fire near suspicious objects. The dog Patron tells children about mine safety in an accessible way — his videos can easily be found on YouTube.
Safety Near Water and During Air Alerts
Swimming is joy. But it must be safe. At the same Time, it should be interrupted if an air alert is declared in the region. Children can enter the water only under adult supervision and in permitted places. If a child cannot swim — a vest or inflatable ring is necessary. The duration of swimming should not exceed 20–30 minutes. Swimming in cold water is prohibited: this poses a risk of cramps and hypothermia. Wearing a hat is mandatory. If an alert begins — urgently leave the water and move to a safe place. The child must know this by heart. Sunbathing is only allowed before 11:00 or after 16:00. Games underwater, grabbing by the legs, pushing are forbidden. It is especially dangerous to swim close to boats or whirlpools.
How to Recognize Heat Stroke
A child can overheat without even realizing it. Sometimes the symptoms are similar to a common infection. The risk is particularly high during play under the scorching sun or in a car without air conditioning. Symptoms include: lethargy, confusion, hot skin, sweating, headache, nausea, temperature up to 40°C. Breathing may become rapid. What to do? Move the child to the shade or a cool place. Remove excess clothing. Wipe the body with a damp cloth or put them under a shower with room-temperature water. Offer water or light unsweetened tea. In case of loss of consciousness — call an ambulance.
Protection Against Insects
mosquitoes, ticks, wasps — small but dangerous. Their bites can cause allergies or infections. To avoid bites, it is advisable to wear closed clothing during walks in the forest or in the evening, use repellents (sprays or creams), and after each outing, carefully check the child — especially the head, neck, behind the ears, and the bends of arms and legs.
What to do in case of a bite:
- Carefully remove the stinger or tick.
- Wash the area with an antiseptic.
- If it itches — apply an antihistamine gel.
- In case of swelling, fever, or rash — consult a doctor.
Summer is happiness. But safety is fundamental. Teach, prepare, explain. And then the vacation will be warm, fun, and at least worry-free.
This article discusses the main rules for safe summer spending for children. Significant attention is given to mine safety, water safety, recognizing heat stroke, and protection against insects. By following these tips, parents can ensure their children have a safe and fun vacation.
