The administration of Donald Trump has made the decision to ban Harvard University from accepting international students. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the university no longer holds certification under the student and exchange visitor visa programs.

According to department representatives, international students already studying at Harvard will have to transfer to other institutions or lose their legal status in the U.S.

Additionally, the government has frozen over $2.6 billion in university funding and suspended future grant allocations. President Trump called for revoking Harvard's tax-exempt status, leading to serious concerns in Cambridge about the repercussions for the higher education system in the U.S.

The university considers the government's actions illegal and emphasizes its commitment to international academic standards. Harvard aims to protect the ability to accept students from over 140 countries, which, according to university representatives, "immeasurably enrich the university and the country itself."

Conflict with the Government and Response to Requests

The university has filed a lawsuit against several federal agencies, challenging the suspension of funding and the government's demands to reform its governance system and policies for enrolling students and faculty. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen requested that Harvard provide information regarding the potential involvement of international students in violent or illegal activities by April 30.

According to university data, foreign students make up about 27% of the total student body, significantly more than the 19.6% in 2006.

Furthermore, the Department of Homeland Security accused Harvard of collaborating with the Communist Party of China and demanded information about possible ties between the university and the Chinese government and military. The government is also considering applying similar measures to other universities, labeling the situation with Harvard as a "warning" for the entire educational community in the U.S.
