Kia's CEO Song Ho-sung stated that Kia vehicles will account for 40% of the total production at the Georgia plant. Initially, the plant was planned to produce 300,000 electric vehicles, but due to the popularity of hybrid vehicles, they were added to the plant's production lineup. Changes were also implemented as part of the $21 billion investment announced by Trump and Chung at an emergency meeting at the White House this week. Trump announced the imposition of a 25% tariff on cars and car parts, which could hurt commercial companies, especially Asian automakers that are among the largest exporters of vehicles to the U.S. After Mexico, South Korea is the second-largest exporter of cars to the United States, followed by Japan, according to S&P. Kia currently produces most of its hybrid vehicles, including the hybrid crossover Sportage, in South Korea. Song said that the new plant in the U.S. will help Kia achieve its goal of increasing U.S. sales to 1.25 million vehicles per year, up from the current 850,000.
