The cooperation agreement between Ukraine and the USA in the field of mineral extraction opens new prospects for Ukraine's energy independence, particularly in the development of unconventional oil and gas sources. Geologist Volodymyr Mykhailov emphasized that implementing this process requires Time, investment, and attention to environmental aspects.

Time and investments before the real extraction begins

According to Mykhailov, for successful oil and gas extraction, Ukraine first needs to make investments and learn from its American partners. Improving extraction methods may take about five years, as happened with the development of shale basins in the USA.

'The hydraulic fracturing method was tested back in the 1960s. However, it was only after fifty years that mass gas extraction began at the Barnett field,' he explained.

Ukraine will have to invite American specialists to implement the latest drilling technologies. However, the own experience and knowledge of Ukrainian geologists and oil workers are also crucial for executing projects.

Environmental aspects and risks of extraction

Mykhailov stressed the importance of ensuring a balanced approach to hydrocarbon extraction, as there are serious environmental consequences. Problems may arise from water pollution, risks of seismic activity, and conflicts with local residents.

'Before starting work, significant investments must be made and environmental standards must be adhered to,' he noted, mentioning problems in the Kharkiv region due to attempts at extraction.

Despite potential environmental threats, Mykhailov believes that adherence to environmental norms can mitigate the negative impact of extraction on nature.
