Diplomatic envoy of President Trump's Steve Witkoff has arrived in Russia and is expected to meet with President Vladimir Putin on Friday. This is confirmed by a source familiar with the trip and data from FlightRadar.

According to Axios, this will be Witkoff's third meeting with Putin as part of Trump's efforts to achieve a ceasefire in the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of significant progress in negotiations over the past weeks. According to a source, the U.S. president even stated that he was 'angry' at Putin's comments regarding Ukraine.

If a ceasefire is not reached by the end of the month, Trump may impose additional sanctions against Russia, using executive powers or asking Congress to pass new sanctions legislation.

“We will know quickly, within weeks rather than months, whether Russia is serious about peace. I hope it is,” said Secretary of State Marco Rubio last week on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Brussels.

Last week, Witkoff hosted Putin's envoy Kirill Dmitriev in Washington, trying to break the deadlock. While Ukraine agreed to Trump's proposal for an unconditional ceasefire, and later to plans for a less-scale maritime truce, Russia has put forward a number of new demands, including the lifting of some American sanctions.

“We are making progress. We hope we are getting closer to reaching an agreement between Russia and Ukraine regarding the cessation of hostilities,” Trump said on Thursday during a Cabinet meeting.

The U.S. and Russia exchanged prisoners on Thursday, which included the release of U.S. citizen and Russian citizen Ksenia Karelin. Negotiations regarding this agreement were a result of a previous meeting between Witkoff and Putin in March.

Trump expressed gratitude to Putin for the decision to release Karelin. He mentioned that the CEO of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), Dana White, informed him that she is the girlfriend of a UFC fighter and asked for help in securing her release.

U.S. and Russian diplomats met again on Thursday in Istanbul to discuss normalizing relations between the countries.

The State Department spokesperson did not respond to Axios' request for comment regarding Witkoff's trip.
