A petition has appeared on the Cabinet of Ministers' website calling for the dismissal of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, Taras Kremin, and the creation of a language police. This news was published on the website of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
On August 28, Veronika Olshanska created a petition to properly protect the Ukrainian language in the public space.
The petition contains the following appeal: "We, the citizens of Ukraine, request the dismissal of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language and the creation of a new state body - the Language Police, which will ensure effective control over the implementation of the Law of Ukraine "On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language"."
At the moment, the petition has been signed by 1,394 people out of the required 25,000. Time remaining to collect the necessary number of signatures - 74 days.
Recently in Ivano-Frankivsk, it was announced the beginning of the work of language inspectors, who need to combat the spread of the Russian language in the city.
Previously, language activist and children's writer Larisa Nitsoy, in a comment for "Glavkom", named three key reasons that led to the deterioration of the statistics of state language use among schoolchildren. Firstly, this is the lack of support and idea from the authorities regarding the importance of the Ukrainian language. In addition, errors in the legislation also affected the situation.
