The European Parliament called on the EU to end dependence on Azerbaijani gas
The European Parliament adopted a resolution calling on the EU to end dependence on gas supplies from Azerbaijan. MEPs expressed their concern regarding human rights violations in Azerbaijan and the possible connection between Azerbaijani gas supplies and Russian gas.
The adopted resolution also calls on the European Commission to suspend the Memorandum of Understanding with Azerbaijan, which was signed in 2022 regarding strategic partnership in the energy sector.
The resolution also states that any future partnership agreement between the EU and Azerbaijan should be conditional upon the fulfillment of certain conditions. Azerbaijan must release political prisoners, carry out legal reforms, improve the human rights situation in the country, and demonstrate readiness to participate in peace negotiations with Armenia following the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in 2023.
