Proper crop rotation in the garden is one of the main keys to success, especially for winter garlic. Experienced gardeners explained which garden crops should never be planted after this type of garlic to avoid losing the harvest.
News.LIVE shares useful tips for gardeners.
Plants after which garlic should not be planted
Onions and garlic are members of the onion family and require the same nutrients. After onions, the soil remains depleted, especially in phosphorus, potassium, and other micronutrients.
Moreover, these two crops are affected by the same pests and diseases, the pathogens of which may remain in the soil until the next plants. Therefore, refrain from planting any onion varieties after garlic, especially leek onions, shallots, or green onions.
Root vegetables
Root vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, and beets actively absorb nutrients from the upper layers of the soil where garlic roots are formed. For example, potatoes extract potassium from nitrogen, while leaving fusarium or wireworm in the soil. Meanwhile, carrots and beets absorb the micronutrients responsible for large garlic heads.
Potatoes are the most dangerous for the soil as they infect it with a fungal disease that affects garlic roots and reduces yield.
Herbs and greens
Parsley, dill, basil, or rosemary leave behind essential oils and chemical compounds in the soil that can inhibit garlic growth. These elements affect the roots, preventing them from absorbing nutrients peacefully.
After herbs, plant crops that restore the soil before garlic. These can be representatives of legumes.Proper crop rotation among plant players in the garden can significantly affect yield and plant development. Garlic requires special attention during rotation planning to avoid yield losses and provide an optimal growth environment. By paying attention to the advice of experienced gardeners, you can make your garden even more productive and enjoy your achievements.
